Volunteer bakers are needed in a community effort to bake a giant, patriotic cake for the Festival at Mount Si.

As part of the ‘Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive!’, a national grassroots campaign to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II, Festival at Mount Si organizers along with volunteer coordinator Cynthia Golpe of My Cakes are making a personalized, giant quilt cake, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at the festival.

The cake will be comprised of more than 200 cakes donated by residents and local bakers.

Cakes will honor the men and women of America’s “greatest generation,” including parents, grandparents and friends, and should be patriotic in designs.

Bakers who bring their decorated cakes can watch as Golpe creates a culinary tapestry honoring loved ones.

Then, join Mayor Ken Hearing and other city officials as the cake is cut and served during a ceremony that will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Chili Cook-Off tent near the Main Stage. At 7 p.m. as part of the commemoration, the Festival at Mt. Si will host ‘Buglers across the Nation’ with a live rendition of “Taps” to honor those that died in service to our Country.

Two hundred 13-by-9-inch decorated sheet cakes will be needed to create the giant cake.

Cakes need to be returned to the festival’s cook-off tent between 10 a.m. and noon.
