Darcy Burner today announced her candidacy for Representative Position 2 in the state’s 5th legislative district. A former candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, Burner is making education a priority in her campaign.
“Our schools should be the best in the nation,” Burner said. “Education is the paramount duty of state government, but the state legislature isn’t getting the job done…. I will work tirelessly to finally live up to our McCleary mandates and fully fund education,” she said. “No issue is more important to our state’s future.”
Burner is a former Microsoft manager and currently runs a small business with her 13-year-old son inCarnation that employs nine people. A graduate of Harvard, she lives with her husband, Jonathan Shapiro,and their two boys, Henry Burner, 13 and Alexander Shapiro, 11, at Ames Lake.
“We need policies that make it possible for Washington’s businesses to innovate and solve problems. We need to fix or get rid of obsolete and poorly-written regulations that are obstacles to businesses getting things done, and we need to make our economy work for everyone,” she said. “We need to grow the strongest economy in the world from the middle class out, ensuring that Washington’s businesses have customers and our markets are built so that everyone can fully participate.”
“I also am a strong believer in personal freedom. Government must stay out of our private lives,” she said.“I strongly support the freedom of women to choose if and when to have children and the freedom to marry the person you love.”
Burner previously ran for Congress and was the Democratic nominee in the 8th Congressional District.
