Dog foils man’s escape attempt across Tolt River

A police dog named Vader stopped a Carnation man who jumped into the frigid Tolt River to flee from pursuing officers. The chase started just before midnight Monday, May 2, when officers with the Carnation-Duvall Police Department attempted to serve one misdemeanor and two felony warrants at a Carnation address.

Their suspect, age 24, ran out the back door of the home, and the officers pursued him on foot as far as the Tolt River, which the man struggled across.

“It had to be cold, it’s all runoff from the mountains,” said Lt. Carey Hert of the Carnation-Duvall Police Department.

He made it across the river, running at nearly 1,000 cubic feet per second and over six feet deep, but was soon discovered and stopped by Vader, a black German Shepherd assisting from the Redmond Police Department.

The pursuing officers stopped at the river, but the man’s trail on the other side was quickly picked up the dog.

“The canine bit him a couple of times, and we put him in jail,” Hert said.

Vader and his handler were on hand in case to the man tried to flee, because the suspect “knows that area so well, he camps out there all the time,” Hert said. “He’s just a regular guy that we deal with all the time.”

The man was treated for his injuries before being booked into the Issaquah Jail. He is currently in jail awaiting arraignment.
