Empty Bowls is a grassroots event, fed by student creativity and community involvement. Several restaurants, including Twede’s Cafe, the North Bend Bar & Grill, Mount Si Golf Course, and the Woodman, are donating soup for the event, and George’s Bakery is donating the bread.

Art students at all three middle schools and Mount Si High School are participating, funded by a grant for materials from the Snoqualmie Valley Schools Foundation. Snoqualmie Middle School staff and contributors have also created bowls, and kitchen staff also donated the bowls used as forms.

A limited number of tickets will be available. Sales start Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the food bank, 122 E. 3rd St. in North Bend, or on the organization’s website, www.mtsifoodbank.org.

Participants can choose their favorite bowls for their meal, supply permitting. Bowls come in a wide variety of shapes and finishes, representing the personalities of their crafters.

For example, Katryna Shaw shaped her bowl into a tree, because “normally, trees represent peace in the Native American culture,” she said, and whoever picks Addison Carr’s creation will have a sort of trophy.

“It really helps people out in a bad situation,” Carr said of the project.
