Several Mount Si baseball players are staying busy on the diamond even though the Wildcats’ season has finished.
Two Mount Si seniors played in the May 31 Kingco 3A/4A baseball all-star games at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue and both did well as the 3A side won one and tied one.
Shortstop Ian Atkinson and pitcher Ryan Utesch represented the Wildcats on the 3A squad, who ended the first game of the double-header in a 3-3 tie with their 4A counterparts. Utesch started on the mound in the nightcap and took the win in a 12-3 3A blowout. The games were feeder games for the state 3A/4A all-star game later this month; neither Wildcat player was nominated to play in that contest.
Atkinson, who will be attending Spokane Falls Community College this fall to play baseball, started the first game at short, played four innings (each game lasted eight innings), went 1-1 with a single and walk and was picked off first base.
Atkinson was proud to be there. “It’s an honor, to be honest. I mean, these are the best players in the league and Kingco 3A and Kingco 4A; they’re the best leagues in the state, so these are essentially the best players in the state, so it’s an honor to be in this game pretty much,” Atkinson said.
