A Fall City man and his dog played a big part in helping King County Search and Recue teams find a lost cyclist who needed medical aid.

The victim, a 33-year-old man, had been mountain biking in the Fall City area on Sunday, Sept. 27, and had lost track of time. He was a diabetic, and had not packed any food. When his blood sugar got low, he quickly got confused, began walking on foot, and dialed 911 just after 4 p.m.

At about 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, Terry Wolf of Fall City, accompanied by his dog, Kona, went out for a run on local trail system, where he met a deputy and learned about the ongoing rescue.

Wolf searched several miles of trails with Kona, looking for the man, but was unable to find his trail. He made his way back to the command post, where deputies had made phone contact with the lost man. Wolf spoke to him and was able to determine his location. Wolf and Kona led two other search members off into the woods. At about 7 p.m., Kona left the group and went down a steep cliff into some thick brush. When the group called out-loud, they were happy to hear the victim call back. Kona had found him quite a distance from the nearest trail. A paramedic in the group checked and treated the victim with glucose and determined that he was well enough to hike out on foot with them. They returned to the base camp, and a family member drove the victim home with no further medical attention needed.

“There is no doubt that the actions of Terry and Kona played a huge part in the success of this rescue,” said Sheriff’s Dept. Spokesman DeFries. “Terry and Kona are examples of the everyday heroes that we meet and assist us on a daily basis, and are worthy of further recognition.”
