With only a few days left before graduation, Emily Woolley and Gillian Kenagy haven’t had much time to wax nostalgically on their four years at Mount Si High School.

The two seniors have been busy with school, community service, friends, family and a long list of the other activities crowding their calendars. Woolley is her class’ valedictorian, and Kenagy is the salutatorian.

The two classmates have a passion for learning and a knack for time management.

“I love learning about everything and being able to understand how things are in the world,” said Woolley.

Math has been her strongest subject.

“I have a very left-brain take on life,” she said. But it also allows for some creativity.

She’s had to work hard in her language arts classes, which didn’t come as naturally for her. She credits several of her teachers with helping her to read and think critically.

When she’s not at school, Woolley is riding Red, her Tennesse walking horse. She’s had him for nine years.

“Little girls get cute ponies, and I got this horse that was huge and taller than me,” she said.

She used to compete with Red, but at 17 years old, he prefers trail riding.

Now, Woolley competes on Laci, a 7-year-old Rocky Mountain horse. Last year in Kentucky, the pair won three world championships together.

Laci’s competitive and fun to ride, but has a mind of her own.

“She’s kind of smart, so you’ve got to get into her head a little,” she explained.

Woolley plans to attend Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., where she wants to focus on math. She is interested in graduate studies after college.

Gillian Kenagy, Mount Si’s salutatorian, has spent much of the past four years in community service through groups such as Key Club and International Honor Society.

North Bend’s food bank, where she volunteers every week, has been like a “second family” for her, she said.

Kenagy plans to attend the University of Washington, where she’ll be in the honors program. She is interested in international and environmental studies, but is keeping an open mind about her major.

“Really, I’m just interested in taking a whole range of classes and figuring out what my niche is,” Kenagy said.
