A man trapped by an avalanche on Snoqualmie Pass last weekend used his cell phone to summon rescuers.

King County Sheriff’s Department responded to the lost hiker at about 3 p.m. Saturday, April 10. The man was descending in the main avalanche chute when it hit, carrying him about 100 feet down the trail.

Due to visibility and high winds, it was difficult for rescuers to search with the Guardian One helicopter.

Returning with Guardian Two, which had different capabilities, the rescue team was able to land.

“We heard him calling for help and deployed a search dog, who found him buried under three to five feet of snow,” said Sgt. John Urquhart, King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

The hiker was airlifted by a military helicopter and taken to a hospital with hypothermia. Urquhart said the man is expected to recover.
