Volunteers called for harvest party

Want to get an insider’s view of festive autumn activities for children and fulfill school volunteer requirements? Encompass has a stellar opportunity for interested residents.

The annual Harvest Carnival, a family-friendly night of fun set for Saturday, Oct. 25, and sponsored by Encompass and Si View Metro Parks, needs 40 community volunteers to help out on that day at Si View Community Center, 400 S.E. Orchard Dr., North Bend. The event itself runs from 2 to 5 p.m., but the volunteer shift will begin with an orientation at 12:30 p.m. and a half-hour cleanup session ending at 5:30 p.m.

Volunteers need to be at least 12 years old and will assist with greeting families, selling game tickets, helping children with games, distributing food and helping at a craft table. Following the orientation, pizza will be served. To sign up to volunteer, call Stacey Cepeda, community activities manager at Encompass, at (425) 888-2777.

Workshop set

for Valley farmers

Farmers who work the rich bottomlands along King County rivers can learn more about flood preparedness, flood recovery and beneficial changes to building rules to help them better protect their livestock and livelihoods.

The King County Agriculture Commission and the King County Department of Development and Environmental Services’ Agriculture Permit Team will hold a workshop on the topics, 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Sno-Valley Senior Center, 4610 Stephens Ave., in Carnation. An hour-long open house starts at 6 p.m., and will provide participants with detailed information about flood mapping on specific properties and other issues. Participants can also stay after the meeting to look at flood maps and ask questions.

The workshop will cover flood preparedness, flood recovery, and county regulations, including what is allowed during a flood emergency, and how to meet permit requirements afterward. Workshop co-sponsors include the Snoqualmie Forum and the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks’ River and Floodplain Management Unit and Agriculture Program.

For more information on the workshop, contact Claire Dyckman with the King County Agricultural Program at (206) 296-1926, or e-mail to claire.dyckman@kingcounty.gov.
