Gounder receives Amhert diploma

Stephanie N. Gounder, daughter of Raj and Nicole Gounder of Snoqualmie, has graduated from Amherst College in Amherst, Mass.

Gounder received a bachelor of arts degree, cum laude. She majored in political science and women’s and gender studies, and graduated from Skyline High School in Issaquah.

She was among 445 seniors who participated in commencement exercises in May.

Founded in 1821, Amherst is a coed liberal arts college with 1,680 students from most of the 50 states and 30 other countries. Amherst awards bachelor of arts degrees in 34 majors.

Gounder has accepted a position with Teach For America. After a five-week training at Arizona State University, she will start teaching sixth grade English at Glen Oaks Middle School in the Recovery School District, East Baton Rouge, La.

Teach For America is a national body of recent college graduates and professionals of all academic majors and career interests who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools, becoming leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunities.

The organization’s mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting promising graduates and future leaders.

Mount Si grad earns masters at Columbia

Julia Walker, a 2001 Mount Si High School graduate, has earned her master of arts degree in human rights from Columbia University in New York City.

Walker received her degree at a ceremony held May 21 at Columbia.

Walker also holds a 2005 bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington with a double major of law, society and justice and comparative history of ideas.

She plans to stay in New York City for at least the next year and has applied for employment at UNICEF. Walker’s mother Vi told the Record that Julia loves New York City and hopes to work in the field of children’s human rights to protect children in the United States and abroad. Walker’s family members are very proud of her hard work to achieve her goals.

“Julia is a kind and caring person who has always worked with children and we know she will make an important contribution in the future,” Vi Walker said.

Valley students on Gonzaga dean’s list

Katherine Anne Little, a junior from Fall City, and Kyle C. Stanton-Wyman, a freshman from Carnation, were among the 899 undergraduate students named to the Gonzaga University President’s List for the 2008 spring semester.

Students must earn a 3.7 or better grade point average to be listed.

One of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the U.S., Gonzaga has a student enrollment of about 6,900 and offers seven undergraduate degrees in a variety of majors, 15 master’s programs, and doctorates in leadership studies and law.

UW names students to spring dean’s list

Students from the Valley have been named to the dean’s list at the University of Washington for spring quarter. To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must have completed at least 12 graded credits and have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (out of a total of 4).
