Valley student studies in Greece

Afton Pilkington of Snoqualmie spent January studying abroad in Greece with Linfield College.

Pilkington, a senior majoring in theatre and history, is the daughter of Karen Pilkington of Snoqualmie. She is active with the Linfield theatre, and took a class called “Theatre and Politics in Ancient Greece.” Students examined the relationship between theatre and politics in ancient Greece by studying Athenian society and Greek plays. They traveled to temples, agoras and other public spaces central to the practice of democracy and theatre.

Pilkington is one of 159 students who participated in on-site study programs through Linfield College’s January Term, a four-week period of concentrated study in which students enroll in one course. January Term offers students and faculty the opportunity to focus their time and attention on a single course, either on campus or at off-campus locations in the United States or abroad. The program is designed to help develop global awareness and insights into major issues of the times as well as to broaden understanding of American society.

Thirteen courses were offered this year and included international sites in Belgium, Cameroon, Chile, China, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Spain and Turkey. Within the United States, students also studied in Hawaii and Oregon.

Encompass offers LEGO experience

Calling all first- and second-graders: you can build a town, city or star base with houses, buildings, pyramids, bridges, tunnels and towers. Or you can build motorized cars, trains, buses and trucks. Race them, crash them and repair them.

These are among the endless possibilities youngsters can explore with the LEGO building system at The Ultimate LEGO Experience, a five-hour hands-on workshop, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, presented by Encompass and taught by Play-Well TEKnologies.

Children will learn useful construction techniques that will prepare them to design and build everything from motorized machines to demolition derby cars to truss bridges and buildings.

Cost per child is $45. The workshop will be held at Si View Community Center, 400 S.E. Orchard Dr., North Bend. To register, call Stacey Cepeda at (425) 888-2777.
