The Jeni Fleming Trio heads west from its home base in Montana late this month to appear in concert in the Snoqualmie Valley on March 26. Presented by Snoqualmie Valley Arts Live, curtain time is 3 p.m. in the Mount Si High School theater for this final show of the current SVAL season.
The trio may perform folksy acoustic renditions of Jerry Jeff Walker or rock out with a pop cover from Cyndi Lauper, but in the end the jazz comes out in every tune. The Jeni Fleming Acoustic Trio is led by Jeni’s powerful and honest voice, capable of effortlessly delivering complex classical and modern jazz dichotomies in one breath, and breezy folk tunes with a modern twist and vibrant original pop in another. Rounding out the trio’s full-bodied melodies are Jeni’s husband, Jake, on guitar and saxophone, with Chad Langford on bass.
Accomplished musicians in their own right, both add depth to the music while perfectly and intuitively knowing exactly how and when to enhance Jeni’s soulful sound. Michel Bedin of the Parisian magazine Jazz Hot calls the group “a rare elegance … [revealing] a great sensitivity and a beautiful musicality.”
In 2002, the trio toured the Midwest for three weeks and recorded its first live album titled “The Trinity Tour.” Released in December 2002, the CD showcases the trio’s outstanding musicianship and features a variety of styles: pop-infused folk tunes, jazz standards, originals and sacred classics. With the material from their second tour in 2003, the trio released its first studio effort, “Things I Meant To Say.” Both albums continue to be well received, garnering rave reviews and extensive air play on public radio stations across the country. “Once Around the Sun,” their third album and second studio effort, was released to a sold-out crowd in December of 2004. It showcases five original tunes written by Jake Fleming.
Before launching their highly successful Jeni Fleming Trio, Jeni and Jake Fleming toured for 11 months in 1998 as a guitar/vocal/jazz duo and recorded their first album, “It is Well.” They also were featured on a nationally televised program by the Odyssey Channel. Langford is known as a composer of note. His catalog of accomplishments includes chamber works and music for several short films.
Their unique, crowd-pleasing sound defies easy classification, but it is winning the hearts of audiences from coast to coast. Don’t miss the chance to hear them in person.
