King County to hold hearing on Fall City housing moratorium

The King County Council will hold a public hearing next Tuesday on a recently issued subdivision moratorium in Fall City.

Following unprecedented housing growth in the rural town, councilmembers adopted a seven-month-long moratorium on new housing subdivisions of five or more lots within Fall City last month.

The pause gives the county time to study zoning and land use policies ahead of major upcoming planning decisions, said Councilmember Sarah Perry, who represents Fall City and the broader Eastside.

Updates to both Snoqualmie Valley/Northeast King County Subarea Plan and King County Comprehensive Plan, two long range planning documents, are underway. They will guide future policy decisions in the region.

Perry, who sponsored the moratorium, has also proposed a 15-month interim zoning control to change zoning requirements on residential lots in Fall City. The proposal would increase setbacks from the street and other lot lines as well as establish a 10,000 square foot minimum lot size.

In a newsletter, Perry said the plan is to adopt the temporary zoning ordinance prior to the expiration of the moratorium in December. The interim zoning would remain in place until the county approves its 2024 comprehensive plan update.

The interim zoning proposal would go to the council for a final vote sometime towards the end of the year, in November or December, said Osman Salahuddin, a Perry spokesperson.
