Mom, two children killed in I-90 accident

SNOQUALMIE PASS - A woman and her two young children were killed July 16 when at about 6 p.m. the vehicle in which they were traveling veered off Interstate 90 about 17 miles east of North Bend. According to the Washington State Patrol, alcohol was a factor in the single-vehicle, triple-fatality accident.

According to accident reports, the woman, Jona Christopherson, 24, was driving her Chevy Suburban containing her four children at a high rate of speed westbound on I-90 when the vehicle went off the road, hit a tree and rolled into a median. The driver and two children, her 3-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter, died at the scene of the crash, according to the Washington State Patrol. All the victims in the crash were from Buckley. The two surviving children in the vehicle, a 7-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl, were take to Harborview Medical Center.

State patrol stated that toxicology reports recorded that Christopherson’s blood alcohol level was determined to be .24, a level three times the legal limit of .08.

Prior to the accident, witnesses observed Christopherson driving in an erratic manner. Several callers reported the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, making numerous unsafe lane changes and being driven on the shoulder of the roadway, according to the state patrol.
