Mount Si Foodball collects more than 30,000 pounds of food.

Wrapping-up their Foodball charity campaign for the holiday season, students at Mount Si High School singlehandedly brought in about 20,000 pounds of food for local food banks.

Students also helped collect another 10,000 pounds in donations from the community at large.

Each grade competed for who could bring in the most food; the sophomore class won the competition by bringing in more than 6,000 pounds.

Runners-up included the Mount Si seniors with 5,400 pounds, followed by the juniors with 4,000 pounds and the freshmen with 3,900.

The sophomores were rewarded with a whole class pizza party during lunch on Thursday, Dec. 17.

During two “Fill the Truck” events held before Thanksgiving and Christmas at North Bend QFC and Safeway, Molly Meyers, student chair for Foodball, said students had collected about 10,000 pounds.

Customers leaving the stores handed bags of food and money to students, she said.

While the grand total was slightly less than last year, Meyers was still proud of the number of donations students collected, considering the economy.

The Foodball committee’s biggest accomplishment this year was coming together to help families during the holidays.

Meyers’ favorite memory was the chance to give a family a Thanksgiving dinner after they missed out on turkeys being passed out at a local church.

“They missed it. Someone had given us a turkey, so we were able to give them a turkey, pumpkins and pumpkin pie,” she said.

Surprised by the large number of students who participated, Meyers said she knew how much work and effort the drive would be and appreciated all the help she got.

Collected food went to Mount Si Helping Hand Food Bank and Encompass in North Bend, two Fall City food banks and a food bank in Preston.

“Preston doesn’t get much down there, and they needed it. So, we’re going to give them some money to help out their food bank,” Meyers said.
