Mount Si students excel at state sports medicine competition; Graysen Kaess elected co-president

Robin Backstrom, Anatomy and Physiology teacher at Mount Si High School, took some of the sports medicine team students to the Washington Career and Technical Sports Medicine Association (WCTSMA) state competition recently, where they placed eighth overall.

Robin Backstrom, Anatomy and Physiology teacher at Mount Si High School, took some of the sports medicine team students to the Washington Career and Technical Sports Medicine Association (WCTSMA) state competition recently, where they placed eighth overall.

In addition to ranking high as a team, the group also had great individual successes. Graysen Kaess achieved a first for Mount Si High School, becoming a co-president of the state organization.

Team members included: Abby Gunning, Kayla Underbrink, Emma Mischke, Lauren McCallum, Abby Weber and Kelly Corder in sports medicine; Courtney Deveny, who placed 24th of 80 students, and Haley Michaels, 33rd, in anatomy and physiology; Kaess, fifth place in CPR and Maggie Kenow, 17th; Mason Marenco, placing 16th of 74 and Bayley Barnett, placing 23rd in exercise physiology; and Josh Trotto, 17th out of 77 students and Hunter Franklin, 19th, in medical terminology.

Six junior varsity students, James Bent, Jamie Trotto, Rose Vogt, Kiahna Alcain-White, Kari Lorenzo and Sami Suttle, competed in the JV quiz bowl as well as the sports medicine test.

There were 46 schools represented this year with over 800 students in attendance.
