Next week, that ringing phone at dinnertime may not be a telemarketer selling blinds or window repairs, but rather a high school student drumming up support for local mathematics.

The Snoqualmie Valley Schools Foundation is kicking off its second annual Phonathon fundraiser, 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 13 and 14.

Newly elected Schools Foundation President Carmen Villanueva hopes to begin her two-year term with a bang during the Phonathon. Last year’s first outing supported science, putting computers on wheels and telescopes into local schools. This year, the foundation’s goal is to do good for mathematics, supplementing classroom help by providing tutors and additional materials.

“We chose the math program becuase we know math is one of the challenges in every school district,” Villanueva said. “We want to make sure we provide opportunities for kids to excel and get the help they need.”

The first annual Phonathon raised about $20,000. Despite the economy, the foundation hopes to get the same level of donations in 2010, maybe even a bit more.

“We have kids in different spectrums who need help or who are excellent and don’t have the added incentives,” Villanueva said. “This year, we need to get through the projects we already have, but now my main focus is to have a successful phonathon.”

As president, she wants to work more closely with the school district to identify their needs.

“I also want to strengthen the relationship with the community,” Villanueva said. “Since I’ve become president, it’s given me the opportunity to talk about the foundation more. Hopefully we’ll get more community support.”
