A request to allow events in North Bend’s cottage residential zone has been voted down by the city’s Planning Commission.

The request, initiated by the owners of Moon Mansion, Paul and Heidi Moon, was to allow event venues and conference centers in the cottage residential zone, where the Moon Mansion is located. Today, the city has no entry for event venues in its table of permissible and conditional uses. Planning staff would have to create the rules and requirements for this use if it is allowed.

City zoning allows only churches, parks and athletic fields, utilities, and small farming/gardening ventures as non-residential uses in the higher-density cottage zone.

Planning commissioners narrowly rejected the request in a 3-to-2 vote. The North Bend City Council will review the commission’s recommendation at its April 5 meeting, 7 p.m. at the Mount Si Senior Center, 411 Main Ave. S.
