A new non-profit organization aimed at providing more recreation opportunities in North Bend is ready to help the city fund a climbing wall in the northeast corner of Torguson Park.

The wall, as proposed, would be the largest outdoor climbing facility in the state, said Matt Bergerson, president of the North Bend Parks Foundation.

The structure, which would echo Mount Si in shape, and feature climbing routes appropriate for all skill levels, would be a centerpiece of North Bend’s 2009 centennial celebration.

The site could attract climbing enthusiasts from all over, and it and other parks foundation projects could also build community in the Valley.

“As North Bend grows and the water restrictions are lifted, there is a strong sense around the community that we want to maintain our quality of life,” said Bergerson, a manager of REI’s Issaquah store who moved to North Bend about a year ago.

“My 3-year-old daughter just started climbing, so I’ll be excited to take her,” added Bergerson, who also climbs.

The foundation will hold its first fund-raiser at the Festival at Mount Si this weekend, serving up cold brews for tips at the Rotary Club-sponsored beer garden.

It is also beginning to seek sponsorship from local companies and private individuals. Bergerson planned to present the organization’s goals and needs to the North Bend City Council on Tuesday, Aug. 5.
