North Bend has authorized a sales tax ballot measure, to be decided by voters in the Nov. 4 general election. The city is now required to recruit people interested in writing statements both for and against the measure, for the general election voters guide.

Interested participants should contact the city by July 14. The city council will appoint committees of up to three members each to draft the statements, at its July 15 meeting.

The proposed sales tax ballot measure would, if passed, increase the city’s sales tax from 8.8 to 8.9 percent and provide revenues dedicated for public safety. Proposed uses for the funds include hiring an additional police officer, to bring North Bend’s police coverage up to two officers on duty for 18 hours a day, every day of the week. It would also allow for additional police emphasis patrols in response to criminal activity in North Bend, and help fund increased contract costs in fire services.

Those interested in serving on either the pro committee or con committee should submit a letter of interest, including name, address, phone number, e-mail address and which committee they would like to serve on, to the city no later than July 14.
