A 15-year-old student was injured by a falling branch at North Bend’s Camp Waskowitz during the windstorms that flailed the Snoqualmie Valley last week.

The girl, a high school student in the Highline district, was injured by a 10-foot-long, four-inch-wide limb around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, while taking part in activities at the camp, which runs outdoor programs for Highline students.

“It just came down in the middle of camp and side swiped her,” said Mark Vetter, firefighter at Eastside Fire and Rescue’s Station 87. “The brunt of it went to her lower leg.”

Katherine Carbone-Rogers, communications officer for Highline School District said, the injured girl had broken bones in her leg but is now recovering.

Strong winds that day brought many power outages to areas such as Fall City, Snoqualmie and North Bend.

Abigail Elliot, spokeswoman at Puget Sound Energy, said heavy winds came through and focused along the Cascade foothills south to Enumlaw.

“South King County and Eastern King County had scattered outages because of power lines coming down,” Elliot said. “All of them were small, but were all across the area.”

The outages in Fall City affected six customers around 6 a.m. but power was restored around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.

At about 7 a.m., 10 customers were affected in Snoqualmie due to a tree in the power lines but power was restored around 4:30 p.m.

Elliot added that crews moved from location to location, removing tree limbs.
