A magnitude 2.9 earthquake centered on Snoqualmie Valley shook communities as far as Federal Way and Redmond on Christmas Eve morning, Dec. 24.

The quake, which happened about 8 a.m., was centered about one mile southeast of Snoqualmie and three miles northwest of North Bend.

No damages or injuries were reported.

The quake was reported to have been felt in Carnation, Duvall, Fall City, North Bend, Snoqualmie and Sammammish, said Paul Caruso, geophysicist for United States Geological Survey National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colo.

The very small earthquake’s epicenter was relatively shallow — “That’s why it was felt,” Caruso said.

By comparison, the much larger magnitude 6.6 quake centered near Nisqually in 2001 was really deep, Caruso said. That minimized some of the damage from that larger quake.

The shallower the quake, the more it is felt and the more damage it causes, Caruso said. Force from shallow quakes affect more surface rock, he explained.
