• Right now is the perfect time to get wood fuel for the winter. According to forest technician Dick Kirby of the North Bend Ranger District, stacks of culled logs, called decks, are often right at the side of the road and can be harvested dirt cheap. However, chainsaws must be equipped with a spark arrestor and mesh screen — the forests are tinder dry.
• The North Bend Chamber of Commerce has chosen George Wyrsch, Sr., as grand marshall for this year’s Alpine Days. The businessman and Chamber member is a well-known personality in North Bend and the Valley. His family moved to the area in 1921. Immigrants from Switzerland, they leased Tollgate Farm.
50 Years Ago: Thursday, August 6, 1959
• Lady Luck has never been a close friend of Mrs. Charles (Lucille) Sample of North Bend, so when Ruth Posey approached her a few weeks ago and asked if she’d like a free trip to Las Vegas, Mrs. Sample shrugged and smiled. Sample was among donators to a raffle ticket drive for the Heart Clinic at Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle.
• The Record was beseiged by phone calls Saturday, each with the same question: “Where’s the circus?” Last Friday evening, the Record received an unsealed envelope from the town of Joseph, Ore. The letter, signed by F. M. Guerrin, agent for the Famous Cole Circus, explained that the show could no come to town due to lack of funds. A lot of kids were disappointed.
75 Years Ago: Thursday, August 9, 1934
• More than 40 cities of eastern and western Washington are joining in a big celebration to mark the completion of paving through Snoqualmie Pass at the summit. The building of highways has been one of the most progressive steps in the development of this commonwealth.
