Residents weigh in next week on the creation of a new Snoqualmie car license fee to pay for street repairs.

The Snoqualmie City Council will hear testimony at a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday, May 24, regarding formation of the new district. Following the hearing, council members will vote to create the Transportation Benefit District.

The City Council would become a Transportation Benefit District Board, which would be authorized to add a $20 street maintenance fee to new and renewing vehicle licenses for citizens of Snoqualmie. The new fee would go into effect on January 1, 2011, and does not require a general or special election.

The district helps the city pay for the improvements and maintenance of public streets in Snoqualmie.

According to city officials, funds to pay for upkeep of streets have decreased due to the loss of Motor Vehicle Excise Tax revenues by state initiative in 1999.

The new ordinance will be discussed at two town hall meetings, 6 p.m. June 2 and 3, at City Hall, 38624 SE River Street. Information can be viewed at www.cityofsnoqualmie.org.
