Snoqualmie Valley School District parents are invited to an information meeting, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14 in the Mount Si High School Library, to hear from the High School Schedule Advisory Committee on proposed changes to the high school schedule.
The committee, of approximately 30 students, parents, high school staff, and district administrators, has been looking at ways to address a change in state requirements for nearly a year now. Members will present an update on their progress since a November parent information meeting, share details about the various schedule options still under consideration, and seek additional input from the community.
After studying five scheduling models, all used successfully at other schools in Washington, the committee has narrowed its list and is considering three main options for Mount Si High School.
In 2019, Washington high school students will be required to earn 24 credits before they can graduate; today, the need only 22 to graduate. Mount Si currently has a six-period day, which offers students a maximum of 24 credits in four years, assuming they don’t fail any classes.
The committee was created to examine ways to build flexibility back into the schedule and to possibly improve the school’s on-time graduation rate, which was reported at about 90 percent, last year.
Members have considered variations on a six-period day, variations on a seven-period day, five-period days with classes scheduled by trimesters, and eight-period days with classes offered in two-period blocks, alternating by semester or alternating by day.
The initial goals of the committee were to leave the start and end times for the school day, as well as the early-release Friday schedule unchanged.
More information on the scheduling options and work of the advisory committee is available on the district website.
