One day after some surprising winter sunshine broke through, Mother Nature dumped several inches of snow on the Valley on the evening of Monday, Jan. 14. The white stuff stranded drivers, delayed school two days in a row and sent Valley residents in search of snow chains, snow shovels – and sleds.

Slick roads

The snow began to stick at dusk Monday, and by evening enough had accumulated on Snoqualmie Parkway to make for some very tricky driving conditions. On the Parkway’s entrance from Interstate 90, passenger cars that weren’t prepared for icy conditions were stalled by the roadside, as the pathway up the hill to Snoqualmie Ridge was worn slick, smooth and treacherous by passing wheels.

“Unfortunately, we’ve got cars that aren’t prepared to deal with snow and go up the hill,” said Jim Humphries, a Ridge resident who stopped for more than an hour and helped other cars get rolling again.
