Ernest “Ernie” Roger Bartley of Snoqualmie was sentenced earlier this month on two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of child molestation in the third degree.

The conviction occurred in the Superior Court of Washington for King County after Bartley, 34, pleaded guilty to the charges Feb. 15. Court records report that the charges stemmed from incidents occurring between Nov. 1, 1998, to Sept. 13, 1999, when Bartley “did aid, invite, authorize, or cause” a then 15-year-old Snoqualmie teen to “engage in sexually explicit conduct, knowing that such conduct would be photographed or part of a live performance.” The incidents occurred at Bartley’s cabin in Cle Elum.

On March 9, the court gave Bartley a suspended sentence of 102 months, or 8 1/2 years, on the condition that he serve 180 days in King County Jail, remain on probation for almost a decade and complete and make “reasonable progress” in a sexual-offender treatment program for up to three years.

He will also be required to register as a sex offender within 24 hours of his release from jail. If Bartley violates any of the conditions for the sentence, he will be ordered to serve the 102 months in jail.

In addition, Bartley must pay for counseling, and restitution, for his victims and their families. He is not allowed to contact his victim or any minor-age children, nor enter areas where minors congregate. He also agreed to not visit any public place in the cities of Snoqualmie, North Bend or Fall City, except when traveling on public roads and streets.

Reports state that Bartley, a car-wash cleaner, became friends with the 15-year-old victim and several of the victim’s friends, who were also minors, in 1998. Bartley is reported to have encouraged the teens to visit his cabin, where he gave them alcohol and marijuana. Bartley videotaped the victim several times at the cabin in a sexual situation and at one point, inappropriately touched the boy. Court documents state that Bartley continually bought gifts for the minors, including cars, motorcycles, clothes and trips to Disneyland, and had the boys page him several times each day. Bartley also named the minor as a beneficiary to his life-insurance policy, according to county records.

Bartley was arrested Sept. 15, 1999, at his Snoqualmie residence after police were informed of his actions with the minors. He changed his original guilty plea to not guilty on Feb. 15 of this year.
