Five years in the making, the Snoqualmie Valley School District has chosen two student representatives from Mount Si High School to join the school board of directors.
Senior Tricia Prewitt and junior Cassady Weldon were chosen after an application and interview process conducted in November.
Expected to help board members understand student issues and perspectives, they will serve as liaisons between the governing body of the school district and the high school student body.
Creating the two student positions was first discussed last February. A policy was adopted in May, and applications were sent to the high school.
Student representatives already have roles in other school boards in the nation.
“We felt like the Valley’s students and academic level needed to get there also,” said school board member Rudy Edwards.
Prewitt attended the Thursday, Dec. 10, board meeting and was administered her oath of office. Weldon had a prior obligation but will be seated at the board’s next meeting on Thursday, Jan. 7.
To qualify for the position, candidates must be in grades 11 or 12 and attend high school full time. They must be in proper academic standing while also active in athletics or student activities. Candidates must be willing to convey student opinion to the board of directors and report board deliberations and actions to the student body.
Prewitt and Weldon will hold office for one school year.
“I’m very pleased with the students that came before us to be representatives,” Edwards said. “They’re good for the job, school and school district.”
