North Bend’s Masonic Lodge donated two bikes and helmets to help promote reading, and school librarian Susan Head challenged students to read 20 minutes a day, 20 days each month. If they did, they got a free book from the library and an entry form to win a bike.

Between October and May, students turned in 1,497 entries.

“That’s 598,800-plus minutes,” Head said. “Needless to say, it was a big hit.”
