Called a “pajama party with a purpose” by its organizer, the Snoqualmie Valley Relay for Life Kick Off was a big success, bringing in an additional eight teams, said participants. Prior to the event on Monday, Feb. 23, at the Salish Lodge and Spa, 11 teams had already signed up for the relay.

“We are well on our way, but still need more,” said organizer Wendy Thomas, who is hoping for at least 29 teams to take part in the summer event.

Goals for 2009 include raising $102,000, creating 1,000 candle-lighted luminaria bags and connecting with 75 cancer survivors. The relay is also aimed at making the community more aware of the efforts of the American Cancer Society.

Relay For Life creates a conversation in the community about cancer prevention strategies, early detection initiatives, the importance of funding research and the availability of programs and services, Thomas said.

“This conversation would not occur otherwise,” she said.

“Cancer is not something people want to talk or think about, and many would prefer to pretend it just doesn’t exist until it bites them,” Thomas said. “My motto is, ‘If you don’t talk to your community about cancer, who will?’”
