The Snoqualmie Tribe will dedicate its newly-purchased food bank property in Carnation, 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9.

The Snoqualmie Tribal Council voted to rename the food bank the Hinzman Food Center, located at 4175 Tolt Ave., in honor of longtime tribal leader Mary Anne Hinzman.

“Mary Anne has always helped people in need,” said Tribe Chairwoman Shelley Burch. “This food bank helped to keep the tribe together and provide for basic needs of the tribal people before federal recognition. It is a privilege to be able to dedicate this reclaimed Snoqualmie territory in her honor for her tireless and selfless efforts over the past four decades to help the poor and feed the hungry.”

Hinzman started the food bank in 1977 in Redmond. For a time, it relocated to Fall City before moving to Carnation. While focused on serving the local Native American population the food bank has always been open to the public. The bank serves about 225 families per week.

The Tribe purchased the food bank property from the Halvorson family in January.
