Young actors build confidence at Si View

To culminate a week-long course in drama and musical theater, 11 local elementary-aged girls showed their stuff in an abbreviated performance of the popular musical “Annie.”

During a five-day summer camp at Si View Community Center, the blossoming performers had learned some new dance steps, how to deliver lines, and, most importantly, to believe in themselves.

“Mostly it’s a self-confidence-building class. The first day, some of the kids don’t want to have lines; they’re really scared. But by the last day of class, they’re up there. Throughout the process they end up surprising themselves with what they find inside of themselves,” said instructor Sara Werner, who has been building the dance and musical theater programs at Si View for five years.

Kelly Corder, 9, has been taking Werner’s classes since she was 4, and described her programs as “lots of fun.”

Kelly’s mother, Kirby Corder, also praised Si View’s programs.

“For the price and the quality of teaching you get, these classes are a good value,” she said.

After years of teaching dance at private academies, Werner said she is happy to work for a non-profit that offers affordable classes.

“What’s great about any community center is that it offers such a variety of programs to all types of people from all economic categories — people that normally wouldn’t be able to obtain special classes,” Werner said.
