Yes, I am actually back for two weeks in a row! I am
determined to keep my promise to my Nana and do my best to do my
column every week.

We have really been lucky so far with our winter
weather (knock on wood). I really thought we were due for a snowstorm
or lots of ice, but so far, so good. I am actually tempted to hang
my sheets on the line on a day when it’s sunny and breezy
because even though it isn’t 80 degrees out, they should still dry.
With the warmer weather, dear little Sparky has actually
ventured outside on occasion. In his younger days, he would
challenge any cat that dared to come into his yard, but now he heads for
the security of his house, especially when the younger and much
more energetic Stella is outside. He quickly devoured his
Christmas/New Year treat from Grandma and Grandpa: a can of tuna. He did
not stop until it was completely gone, and the next day he looked at
his dish of cat food as if it were below him to eat such a thing.

Many people are saddened by the passing of Jeanne
Hansen. Jeanne has long been a friend of our family and of many
other people. She was a very energetic person and donated much
time doing things for the city of Snoqualmie, as well as
donating to good causes. She worked on Snoqualmie Days for many
years and donated lots of ice-cream cones to the pingpong drop
every year. I’m certainly going to miss her friendly face, and will
always think of her when I see everyone enjoying ice-cream cones
during Snoqualmie Days.

It happened this week: Batman premiered on TV in
1966 with Adam West as the Caped Crusader and Burt Ward as
Robin. In 1962, Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” hit the charts at No. 1,
and in 1949, RCA introduced 7-inch, 45-rpm vinyl records. The
first one made was “Gaite Parisienne,” the famous cancan dance.

In the mood for some dessert? How about a Kahlua
chocolate trifle? Bake one chocolate cake mix in a 13- by 9-inch pan
according to package directions. After cooling, poke holes in the
cake and pour 1 cup of of Kahlua over it. Refrigerate overnight.
When ready to assemble trifle, whip two small cartons of whipping
cream. Mix 3 1/2 cups of milk with two boxes (3 1/2 ounces each) of
instant chocolate pudding mix, and beat according to package
directions. Cut cake into cubes. Layer (in a glass dish or bowl)
one-third of each ingredient as follows: cake cubes, pudding, whipped
cream and crushed chocolate covered toffee candy bar. Repeat the
layering two more times, ending with the whipped cream and
candy bars. Enjoy!

What do dogs teach us? Sometimes you have to speak up to
get what you want and be willing to learn new tricks. What do
cats teach us? A little peace and quiet will calm both you and your
soul, and will conserve your energy for when it counts.

Take time to sit back this week, rejoice that the holidays
are over and have a Kahlua trifle! See you next week.
