First of all, I hope you all have dry houses. I’m not sure who decided
that floods and holidays should arrive at the same time, but I think it was a
mistake. Is there someone we can write to about this?

Tuesday was the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice. Now
we start back toward the longer hours of daylight. I think the day gets
longer by about seven seconds a day, but we notice it very quickly.

If you are doing any traveling over the holiday season, be sure to
take along boots or extra shoes. If you have to stop to put on tire chains, or
for some other emergency, this will make things much more comfortable.
You can also carry an old shower curtain or tarp in the trunk. Makes a
good ground cloth if you need it.

I have an absolutely fool-proof fudge recipe to share. Melt three
cups of chocolate chips, together with one can of sweetened condensed
milk. Add one teaspoon of vanilla. That’s it! You can add nuts or
marshmallows, peppermint flavoring in place of vanilla. You can also replace one cup
of the chips with peanut butter or butterscotch flavor chips. This makes
very nice creamy fudge. It can be made in the microwave, but I prefer the
old double boiler. Guess I’m just an old- fashioned girl.

Since it looks like we will have “Seattle snow” this Christmas, I
would like to share a Christmas song I wrote a couple of years ago. With
apologies to Irving Berlin, I offer “Wet
Christmas.” (Sung to the tune of “White Christmas”)
I’m dreaming of a wet Christmas
Just like the ones I’ve always known
Where the puddles glisten
And ducks go swimming
And raindrops fall down, oh so slow
I’m dreaming of a wet Christmas
With every damp shoe that I dry
May your day be merry and wet,
And may this wet Christmas be the best.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas. I hope Santa Claus
brings you the gifts that you hope for, and that all the blessings of the
season cover your home.
