Would someone please explain to me how the “Defense of Marriage Act” defends marriage by prohibiting some citizens from marrying? The title is nicely crafted to evoke an emotional response from those who have a desire to support traditional lifestyles, but it is blatantly dishonest.
Let’s be honest and re-name it the “Don’t Let Fags and Dykes Marry.” A real Defense of Marriage Act would defend individuals’ rights to marriage, regardless of what part of society they occupy. It would encourage this right for all citizens because it would represent the wisdom and courage of the writers and state that the commitment of a marriage – between any two adults – is the only kind of glue that can hold our society together.
I’m tired of the well-turned phrase that hides the real issue. If your point of view is valid, you don’t need to disguise it.
