Summer has officially arrived and with it comes a wilted Sparky. He
does not like hot weather at all. He looks so pathetic when he comes in and
flops in front of the fan and meows weakly at me. He definitely knows how
to drum up sympathy from me. It’s definitely a reminder to all of us pet
owners to keep fresh water supplied for our beloved animals.

Baseball is a big part of summer and after watching Brian
coach Brandon’s team of 8 and 9 year olds, I have a lot of respect for the
coaches of these teams and for the parents that support them. There was always a
big turnout of family at games, and the parents encouraged their kids to
have fun rather than put pressure on them to always do good. The kids all
got along well and so did the parents.
When I watched how good Brian was with these kids and the way
they responded to him, I knew this was one of the things that is so loveable
about him. I hope everyone takes time to let the people that volunteer their time
to work with kids know how appreciated they are!

Corny joke of the week: Why were the bees on strike? They
wanted shorter flowers and more honey!

I notice that as I get older, I bruise easier (especially when
roughhousing with an 8-year-old boy!). To soothe a bruise, make an ice pack by
mixing one cup rubbing alcohol with 2 cups water in a quart size zip-top bag
and freeze. It won’t freeze solid, so it’s perfect for shaping around knees
and elbows, plus it’s reusable.

I still cannot fathom why I signed up to do another marathon! Right
now the walks are still short but as I look ahead to the longer and longer
walks, my memory is jogged by aching legs, blisters and weekends taken over
by long walks and the urge to do absolutely nothing afterwards. But when
I sat down and made a pro and con list, the pro list won by a mile.

It happened this week: Frank Sinatra made his first appearance
in the Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore in 1929, Ken Benz drove the first
car in Germany in 1886 and Bill Haley and the Comets broke the chart
with “Rock Around the Clock” in 1955.

How about some Three-Fruit Punch for that hot summer
picnic? Blend 16 oz. can frozen lemonade, 8 oz. can crushed pineapple,
10-oz. package frozen strawberries (thawed). Add 3 qt. ginger ale just before
serving and serve with crushed ice.
