CC 21A.04.060 Rural area zone.
A. The purpose of the rural zone (RA) is to provide for an area-wide long-term rural character and to minimize land use conflicts with nearby agricultural or forest production districts or mineral extraction sites. These purposes are accomplished by, 1. Limiting residential densities and permitted uses to those that are compatible with rural character and nearby resource production districts and sites and are able to be adequately supported by rural service levels.

A fundamental component of the County-wide planning strategy is the maintenance of the traditional character of the Rural Area with its mix of forest, farm, high-quality natural environment, rural cities, unincorporated Rural Centers, and variety of low-density residential uses. The basic elements of this rural character are… G. Rural Economy… The Rural Areas make a unique contribution to King County’s economy. In addition to farming, fisheries and forestry, cottage industry shall be recognized as making a significant economic contribution in Rural Areas, and should be encouraged.
