Even though the season has ended, the Mount Si softball program has been busy off the field.
The Wildcats have officially announced dates and times for their summer camp, to be held 3 to 6 p.m. July 14 through 18 at Mount Si High School’s softball field.
The camp will help prepare girls’ softball players ages 8 to 16 for high school softball within the Mount Si program, developing skills that will help them be successful in the sport. Instructors include Wildcat head coach Larry White and assistant coaches Brian, Traci, and Erica Tawney, and Kevin Sweepe. White and his coaching staff this season led Mount Si to a 15-10 record, and the program enjoyed arguably its biggest turnout in many years in 2008. Traci Tawney is a former University of Washington softball player, and participated in the college softball World Series with the Huskies.
This camp costs $100 to participate, and campers receive a T-shirt. Participants are required to bring a glove, bat, sliding gear, and a bottle of water. Registration forms are available at the high school and are also expected to be available on the Mount Si softball Web site, which can be reached by going to http://www.snoqualmie.k12.wa.us/schools/mshs/sports, and clicking on “Softball” in the left menu bar.
Senior Kyleen Sweepe played in the senior all-star tournament featuring top high school senior players from all over Washington. Her West Central squad won the event, held at the University of Washington on May 31. Sweepe went 2-3 in the tournament, and played strong defensively. She was one of three shortstops selected to the team, all of whom were Kingco 3A players. The team also benefited from strong pitching by Stacey Hagensen of Newport and Felecia Harris of Kentlake, who both received a lot of attention this season.
The Wildcats named postseason award winners at a banquet held June 4 in North Bend. Most valuable player honors were split between Katie Shaw and Katie Brett; Sweepe took top defensive player honors, while Megan Stone brought home the top offensive player honor after a breakout freshman season. Kelsey Walker won the most improved player award, and Danae Englund took the “Lady Wildcat of the Year” award for sportsmanship.
Danielle Covello earned the best teammate of the year award, and Brielle Buhner got the coaches’ award.
