Cedarcrest and Sammamish fought to a 1-1 draw in the Red Wolves’ first soccer game of the season.

The Cedarcrest girls played well in the Tuesday, Sept. 1 match, getting 13 shots on goal to the Totems’ 7.

The Red Wolves tallied first, as Erica Debrecht, a senior and team captain, finished a play on an assist by junior Jessica Hinton.

The Totems rallied back near the end of the match, as Danielle Brown finished on an assist from Alison Ulrich.

Totems goal keeper Jordan Enos and the Sammamish defense worked well together, defending the attack of juniors Maggie Plies and McKenna Swanson.

Red Wolf senior goalkeeper Jordan Cleman played the first half and shut out the Totems. Marissa Keefe, a senior and team captain, played well in her first appearance in goal for CHS in nearly two years. Marissa and the defense of Lauren Rodger, Morgan Kather, Jess Pitts and Lindsey Bottman worked together to turning away all of Sammamish’s challenges but the one.

The Red Wolves play the second of two pre-season, non-league matches at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at Mount Si High School.

Junior varsity

The Cedarcrest and Sammamish junior varsity teams were well matched, as well, as their game remained scoreless until second half, near the 65th minute, when Madaline Bakke was able to take advantage of a mistake by the Totems center defender.

Then, with just minutes played, the Totems took advantage of a Red Wolf lull in focus and pulled even. With about eight minutes remaining in the match, Bakke was able to again take advantage of a defensive breakdown to score the winning goal.

Taryn Bruskland, a last minute substitute goalkeeper, performed well. And while Bakke’s tenacity was certainly the difference on the score board, the play of Emily Van Valkenburg at the center defender position for Cedarcrest was a match standout.
