The Wildcat girls are on a roll.

A season that started out slow and looked bleak as late as the middle of last month has turned completely around, all thanks to a six-game win streak which continued with two wins against top Kingco opponents last week.

One of the main themes of the slow start for Mount Si this season was difficulty rebounding and struggles on offense. Last Tuesday, Feb. 10, the Wildcats turned the tables in a big way against the Bellevue Wolverines. An awesome rebounding effort, along with tough defense that caused the Wolverine offense to struggle, helped Mount Si to a big 40-39 victory over Bellevue.

It was a coming out party for freshman Sarah McDonald. Led by her 13 rebounds and eight points, Mount Si outrebounded Bellevue by a wide 41-10 margin as a team, and the Wildcat defense held the Wolverines to just 29 percent from the floor, a level Mount Si earlier in the year was all too familiar with themselves. McDonald was ready.

“Going into the game, I just thought, ‘Wow, I really need a game to just pick myself up on the team, show them I’m part of this team and that I want to be part of the wins,’” the freshman said.

Hailey Eddings and Traci Nelson led Mount Si offensively with 10 points apiece, while Caitie Richards scored five points.

Alyssa Gilbert, Emilie Gilbert and Catelyn Webber all scored 10 points apiece to lead Bellevue.

Last Thursday, Feb. 12, was a special Senior Night for both the Wildcat and Islander seniors, as they were all honored prior to the game.

The Wildcats once again dominated on the boards, and their defense stood tall, as Mount Si held off a late Islander charge to take a 57-47 win over a Mercer Island team that goes into this week’s league tournament as the top seed.

Mount Si outrebounded the Islanders 40-27, led by the solid nine-board, 12 point effort by Eddings. Richards scored 18 points to lead the Wildcats offensively, while Nelson added 11 to pace the victors.

McDonald continued to show her strength in the paint, with a solid seven-rebound effort.

If Mount Si wins its home elimination game, Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the Kingco Tournament, they will play at Bellevue Community College Thursday and Friday, times to be determined.
