Leading keeper in the Kingco League with six shut-outs to his credit as of Thursday, Mount Si senior Dillon Oord is unmistakeable on the field. Most of his teammates are close-cropped, but Oord’s sheaf of dreadlocks whip and sway when he dives and chases the ball.
A music fan, Oord’s hairdo is inspired by the likes of rapper Li’l Wayne and Real Salt Lake MLS player Kyle Beckerman. He’s been dreaded for three years.
“I like the looks of them,” said Oord, who craved the locks as a teen.
Soccer has also been a part of Oord’s life for years, all the way back to age six, with him settling into the goalkeeper’s box around then.
“I played baseball, basketball and all that, but soccer is the one I went back to,” he said. The focus on teamwork and the physicality of the game appealed to him.
“My motivation (is) to get that shutout and help the team get the win,” Oord said. “I put in the most effort I can to get it done.”
One might think that the man in the back might get bored at times, waiting for the ball to arrive, but it’s not so, Oord said.
“There is always something to do,” he said. “You have to organize the defense and figure out what you’re going to do, coming in.”
There is some pressure with the position.
“You have to take it, like, your team is with you and they’re going to support you through it,” he said. “Whatever the result is, we’re still a team.”
Feelings rise or fall depending on whether Oord blocks the ball in the moment.
“If it’s a tough save, I’m all amped up,” he said. If the ball makes the net, “I’m frustrated, I want to get the next one.”
On the 2011 squad, he shouts out defender Johnny Kramer.
“He’s my go-to guy when I’m in trouble,” Oord said. “All my outside backs have been doing good.”
With Oord headed to college in New Mexico this fall, coach Darren Brown has brought out sophomore Alex Anderson to get some net time in several games.
Oord advises Anderson to work and train hard.
“When you get out there, keep your head even. Stay calm,” he said.
