Fall City resident Shanna McCarron is living her dreams on the football field.
McCarron plays for the Seattle Majestics, a professional women’s football team in Kent. The 1998 Mount Si grad and former soccer player joined because she wanted something different. Prior to joining the Majestics, she hadn’t played tackle football.
“It just seemed like a great opportunity to be able to play something (I) haven’t played before,” McCarron said.
The feeling of being in the game is amazing, “unlike any feeling playing any sport,” she added.
“When the ball snaps, your adrenaline just drives you,” McCarron said. “We are out there 110 percent, we are giving everything we have,” McCarron said.
The Majestics are members of the Independent Women’s Football League, comprised of a large number of teams from across the United States. Teams are split into three divisions, and Seattle is in the top tier, Tier I. McCarron and her teammates play against local teams from Portland and Corvallis, Ore., as well as far-off cities such as Los Angeles or Chicago.
The Majestics completed their 2009 season in July. Games are played mainly in the spring and early summer, and the home field is French Field, a high school stadium in Kent.
Seattle went 8-0 in the regular season before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Chicago team.
The Majestics players come from many different backgrounds, but there is one thing which helps them gel as a team and be successful — “love of the game,” McCarron said.
Unlike most other pro or semi-pro teams, Majestics players pay to play. They are also responsible for providing their own equipment.
McCarron, like many other players, works a full-time day job as a supervisor for Costco. On the team, she plays both offense and defense, and is also the team’s “new player coordinator,” responsible for putting together tryout camps which are coming up in the local area. On top of that she is a mom. The key to balancing it all is support, McCarron said.
“My friends and family are so supportive and so excited,” she said, adding that both her parents were especially involved.
McCarron won the team’s rookie of the year award this year, and that came as a shock to the Fall City resident.
“It was completely surprising,” she said.
McCarron is looking for other local women to join her on the Majestics.
Tryout camps are Oct. 10 and Nov. 14 at French Field. Cost to participate is $50 to register before the date of the camp, $60 to register on the day of the camp. Contact McCarron for more information at (425) 443-0493 or e-mail her at smccarron@theseattlemajestics.com.
