The Mount Si High School boys soccer team got back in the win column after three straight losses last Monday, April 14, as they outlasted Liberty in a key matchup.

Adam Baumgardner scored twice and assisted the third goal, and Doug Silvius added the third goal to lead the Wildcats to a huge 3-2 win over the Patriots.

Silvius scored the first goal for Mount Si in the 10th minute off the Baumgardner feed to make it 1-0. Just four minutes later, the Wildcats built their lead up to 2-0 on the first Baumgardner goal. After Jesse Sorteberg scored for Liberty in the 51st minute to make things interesting, the Wildcat senior scored his second tally in the 69th minute to seal it up. Sorteberg again tried to create a little doubt in the outcome with his second goal of the contest in the 73rd minute, but the Mount Si defense and goalie Ryan Herman buckled down and finished the job.

The Wildcats came home last Wednesday, April 16, but defensive miscues proved costly as they fell to the Bellevue Wolverines 3-1.

Bellevue opened the scoring in the 16th minute, with a goal from Viktor Drangnell, which came as the result of a defensive miscue by the Wildcats. Liam Kelly, who scored against Mount Si when the two teams met at Bellevue earlier this season, scored for the Wolverines in the 25th minute, as he ran past Mount Si goalie Cody Tipton and fired the ball into an empty net. It was 2-0 into halftime for the Wolverines.

“What went wrong is we left Viktor (Drangnell) too much time. He’s an incredible talent, and when you give a player like that too much time to create, it can give them opportunities to score in the box. And he did,” said Mount Si coach Darren Brown.

Adam Baumgardner got the Wildcats on the board in the 53rd minute, with a goal off a rebound of a previous Mount Si shot that deflected off of Bellevue’s goalkeeper. Baumgardner had a couple of chances later to tie the game, but the senior’s efforts went for naught as neither chance resulted in a goal. Will Rattigan, a sophomore who originally started out this season on the Wolverine junior varsity but has since been called up, scored the insurance goal for Bellevue off a rebound of another shot by the Wolverines in the 74th minute, and that took care of things.

The team is starting to show a little ‘brotherly love,’ as in addition to the Baumgardner brothers, Adam and Eric, both currently on varsity, the Joselyn brothers came on the scene last week, as sophomore Sam was called up to varsity from junior varsity and joined his older brother, Ben, on the team.

Sam Joselyn is excited and ready to help out.

“It’s great,” he said. “I didn’t get a chance to go in tonight, but practice was fun and I hope to contribute.”

Ben Joselyn was a little more sentimental.

“No one I’d rather be playing with,” he said. “He’s my younger brother and that’s about as good as you can get.”

Sam hopes to follow in his older brother’s footsteps.

“As my brother moves on, I hope to take his place,” he said. “I hope that I can do as much for the team as he does.”

The Wildcats went to Sammamish last Friday and fell 2-0 to the Totems. That loss hurt Mount Si’s playoff chances, which were seriously damaged with the announcement this week of this season’s league playoff format, which will only award berths to the top five teams in the regular season, as opposed to six in past seasons. The Wildcats are solidly in sixth place in league currently, with a 4-5-4 record.

“The league has to start getting ready for the seven-team preparation that we’re doing [for next year], so we’re switching it from six to five,” Brown said. “I think it’s a good thing.”

The Wildcats’ lone game this week is Friday, April 25, at home against Interlake. It’s a must-win if they want any chance of playoffs this season.

Mount Si beat the Saints 2-0 in their earlier meeting this season at Interlake. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
