Friends of Snoqualmie resident and heart transplant patient Nate Gunderson are planning a golf tournament near Olympia, Wash., to help with the operation’s significant expenses.

In April, Gunderson, 31, was diagnosed with bacterial endocarditis. His doctors discovered that bacteria around his heart had eaten through one of his heart’s valves.

Gunderson received a lifesaving heart transplant July 5, at Spokane’s Sacred Heart Medical Center. But the new heart also brought staggering expenses.

Even with medical coverage, Gunderson and his wife, Genevieve, face significant ongoing expenses. For the rest of his life, he needs follow-up care and daily medication, whichcan cost between $2,000 to $5,000 per month. The medication is as critical to his survival as is his new heart.

Gunderson received help from the National Foundation for Transplants, a non-profit organization based in Memphis, Tenn., which helps patients raise money to cover expenses.

The tournament is Sunday, Aug. 23, at Capitol City Golf Course, 5225 Yelm Highway S.E. in Lacey. Admission is $100 per player or $400 per team and includes green fees, cart, range balls and lunch.
