arsity pulls out impressive win
With a balanced offensive attack and a suffocating defense, the eighth-grade Snoqualmie Middle School Eagle varsity girls’ basketball team defeated Chief Kanim Middle School 49-25. The Eagles, who finished its season with an 8-2 record, jumped out to a 12-5 first-quarter lead.
Sarah Travis and Erin Caldwell combined for 10 of those first-quarter points. Nicole Remish slammed the door shut on the Hawks with her suffocating defense throughout the game. The Hawks made a run on the Eagles, cutting the lead to 19-13 with three minutes left in the first half, but Robyn Pearson and Tricia Conway rallied the Eagles back to a 26-16 half-time lead.
Amy Whitney, Kali Walker and Chelsie Eddings shut down any hopes the Hawks had with their tough defense that led to many fast-break layups in the second half. Jordan Tipton had her outside shooting game going, as she shot 2-for-3 from the field, and all her shots were from 15 feet out. The Eagles’ Collette Hatch and Tara Eddings finished the job Remish started with defense that made it hard for the Hawks to breathe. The Eagles were led in scoring by Alina Plavsky and Sarah Travis who each scored nine points, while Erin Caldwell added eight.
The Hawks were led by the 14 points of Chelsy Potoshnik.
Over their two years at SMS, the girls have a combined 16-4 record. The future looks bright at Mount Si.
Tolt finishes season strong
The Tolt Middle School eighth-grade varsity girls’ basketball team finished off a successful season by beating Beaver Lake and Chief Kanim, then losing a heartbreaker to Pine Lake.
“This team has improved so much this year,” said coach Vern Hough. “It showed in our close games against Issaquah and Pine Lake in the second half of the season.”
Against Chief Kanim, Tolt struggled early but fought its way to victory. Jamie Coe led the Thunderbirds with 10 points. Katie Powell scored five. Sarah Scott, Shasta Waltz, Emily Oakes, Stephanie Whims and Emily Coomer scored two points each. Karen Lawton scored three, and the final score was 28-17.
The Thunderbirds played Beaver Lake next and built a huge half-time lead. They then coasted to a 44-25 win against the overmatched Bulldogs. Oakes led the scoring with 12 points, and Coe added 11. Lawton had 10 points and Caitlyn Roger had four. Waltz added one and Cayce Ramirez had her best game of the season.
The game of the season, though, had to be against Pine Lake at home. The Tolt girls played about as well as they could for three quarters. With minutes to go in the third, they held a 29-18 lead. Pine Lake finished the third quarter strong, but Tolt still led 29-23
It looked like the Thunderbirds were going to pull off a major upset, but Pine Lake came back in the fourth to win 41-30.
“A lot happened in that last quarter, and not much went our way,” Hough said. Coe led with 11 points and seven steals. Whims had eight points and 10 rebounds. Oakes had seven points and nine rebounds and Lawton chipped in four points.
