Bird battle scheduled

The annual Battle of the Birds varsity soccer and varsity boys’ basketball match-ups will take place at 7 p.m. Wed., March 24 ,for soccer and at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 25, for basketball. Both contests will be held at Mount Si High School.

The seventh-grade varsity boys’ basketball game will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity eighth-grade teams at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available during both contests. Admission will be charged for both events with prices at $2 for adults and high-school students, $1 for middle-school students with no ASB, free to middle school ASB card holders and for children under six with a paying adult.


Hawks defeat Wolverines

The Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks’ seventh-grade varsity basketball team traveled to Pine Lake last week where they defeated the Wolverines 40-37. The Hawks made some key steals from its press in the final minute of the game and Chad Billings’ clutch free throw iced the game for the team. Joey Evans once again led the effort with 12 points and eight steals. Tyson Riley kicked in eight points and two steals while teammate Alex Hibert added nine points and five rebounds.

Zach Brevick added two points, Zach Lindor added two rebounds, Spencer MacEwan added three rebounds and Brian Johnson added two rebounds.


Hawks’ eighth-grade team drops Pine Lake

Behind the 13 points and 12 rebounds of Jake Handy, the Chief Kanim eighth-grade varsity boys’ basketball team defeated the Pine Lake Wolverines 56-54. Handy secured the win with a last-second jump shot.

The Hawks made the shots that counted down to the strech to pull off an exciting win. In addition to Handy’s efforts, Sam Hunston added 16 points and five rebounds, Blake Hepner added eight points and seven rebounds, Justin Poth added nine points, Curtis Beach had eight points, Jake Tweten had two rebounds, Thomas Hunt had two rebounds and Ben Emerson had two steals.


Eagles move to 6-0

The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade varsity boys’ basketball team began its season with two impressive victories over Maywood (65-57) and Issaquah (73-53).

In an aggressive contest against Maywood, both teams battled to gain control and momentum. Caleb Williams was instrumental at point guard, dishing out assists to teammates while racking up 15 first-half points. Taylor McCain provided extra muscle in the paint, as he swept the boards and banked in seven first-quarter points. The Eagles gained momentum in the second half as Kevin Isackson hit three clutch shots from the outside. McCain, along with Max Nelson, dominated the boards inside, with McCain finishing the game with 16 and Nelson dropping six. Williams out-quicked his opponents on both ends of the court, enroute to a game high 33 points to lead all scorers.

Against Issaquah, the game initially began with both teams scrapping to gain control. McCain was a force down low, sweeping the boards and connecting on bank shots, to lead scorers with 18 first-half points. Williams again pushed the tempo as he sliced and diced his way through and over defenders for 10 first-half points. Ian Brown sank two buckets from long range, and along with Nelson’s six, the Eagles built a 38-25 halftime lead.

With Nelson rejecting Panther shots and Frank McLaughlin grabbing the rebounds, Williams and McCain stepped up the pace and action in the second half. As Williams drove the lane and connected on pull-up jumpers to finish with 18 points, McCain proved too tough to handle for Panther defenders, pumping in another 18 second half points to lead all scorers with 36. It was a great team effort as everyone on the roster managed to put numbers in the book. The Eagles have improved their record to 6-0.


Hawks pull out last minute win

Behind a strong showing by Joey Evans, the Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Maywood 42-40. The Hawks were down by six with 1:20 remaining. The team forced three consecutive turnovers and made two key baskets to pull ahead for good in the final 42 seconds of the game.

Evans had 17 points, 10 steals and seven rebounds while teammate Tyson Riley had 11 points and four steals. Alex Hiebert had six points, Spencer MacEwan had four points, Chad Billings had two points, Brian Johnson had two points, Zach Kirchmeyer had two rebounds Mike Nelson had two rebounds and Zach Lindor had one steal.


Rebounding secures win

The Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade varsity boys’ basketball team improved their record to 6-1 with a 57-54 win over Maywood last week. Solid second-half defense, clutch free throws, and key rebounds enabled the Hawks to preserve the win. Sam Hunston led the effort with 23 points and 10 rebounds while teammate Jake Handy contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds. Blake Hepner had 11 points and eight rebounds, Ben Emerson had four points, Curtis Beach had three points, and both Jake Tweten and Justin Poth had two points each.
