Mount Si fastpitch snags 4th-berth state ticket

The Mount Si softball team went two for four last week, securing the number-four berth to state this coming Friday and Saturday, May 27 and 28, in Lacey. The Wildcats bested West Seattle and Seattle Prep on Wednesday, May 18, but fell to Holy Names and Bainbridge on Thursday, May 19.

In Thursday’s Bainbridge match-up, Mount Si led with one run in the first, kept it tied 4-4 in the fourth, but were scoreless from there, as the opposing team scored eight in the sixth to end it. The final score ended at 13-4. Tamarra Crowe went three for three at the plate and Maura Murphy and Celine Fowler each added two hits for the state-bound Wildcats.

Earlier that day, the team fell to Holy Names. Both teams were scoreless in the first two innings, but errors plagued the team in the third and fourth, opening up two big four-run innings for the opposing side; the Wildcats couldn’t recover.

Mount Si shortstop Murphy again proved her mettle, though, going three for three at the plate.

On Wednesday, Mount Si wasted no time jumping on Seattle Prep in a loser-out match at Lower Woodland Park. The girls scored early and often, using effective

bunts to end in five innings, 16-3. Kassidy Maddux led the charge, going four for four, while pitcher Lauren Padilla claimed the win, keeping the Panther hitters off balance.

With a berth to state on the line that day, Mount Si next took on the number-three Metro team, West Seattle, who was shut down by pitcher Kendra Lee in the first three innings. They rallied in the third, when the ‘Cats committed two errors and allowed West Seattle to score three runs on two hits. The Wildcat bats went cold for the next few innings and Mount Si nervously clung to a 4-3 lead, losing it to a tying run in the sixth. But things got going again in the eighth, when Murphy fired a single to left, followed by Lauren Smith. Danielle Massengill then advanced the runners with a ground out. With runners on second and third, freshman sensation Rachael Picchena battled with an eighth pitch at bat and connected on a sacrifice fly ball to center to score Murphy from third. Carly Weidenbach ended the inning with a screaming line drive out to third that about ripped a glove off.

Then it was up to Lee to show her stuff, and she answered, getting a ground out for the first out and fanning the next two batters.
