The Mount Si golf team has struggled out of the gate this spring, as the varsity girls learn and improve their games.

The Wildcats thus far are 0-3 in matches, having fallen to Eastlake last Tuesday, April 14, in addition to a pair of losses before spring break to Liberty and Newport.

Mount Si’s two top golfers thus far are Maggie Robinson and Julia Dorn. Robinson has fired an average of 57 in her two matches, but did not play March 26 against Newport. Dorn has averaged slightly over that in her three matches thus far. Each has shot a round of 55, which is the Wildcat individual low thus far this season. Robinson’s 55 against Liberty earned her a medalist award, which goes to the player who cards the lowest score in the match from either side.

In the match against the Wolves, Robinson fired a 59 and Dorn a 61, but it was Eastlake who was dominant, winning 251-321, the low score being the winning one. Katherine Jamerson shot a 62 and Delaney Bullinger carded a 69 to pace Mount Si, while Dana Mydland took medalist honors for the Wolves with a round of 43 on the Sahalee Country Club course, a course which has hosted PGA pro men’s championship events in recent years.

The Wildcats have six more matches to play, including a test Thursday, April 23, with Issaquah, so there is time for players to improve. As the weather warms up, scores are likely to get better.

It’s not just this year’s team that is facing challenges. Katie Somers, who was a star with the Mount Si program before graduating last summer, is working on her game as a freshman at Boise State. Somers has only competed in one event thus far, the Canes and Cardinal Classic in Miami, Fla., earlier this month, and fired three 18-hole rounds in the 80s to finish 62nd (high school matches are over nine holes). She had been scheduled to compete in a second event in San Jose, but that event was rained out.
