Mount Si High School’s golf program had a great showing at last week’s state 3A boys and girls’ golf tournaments in Bellingham.

The Valley’s top performer was Katie Somers. The Boise State-bound senior put together a strong fifth-place effort in the girls’ tournament, shooting rounds of 80 and 77 over two days last Tuesday and Wednesday, May 20 and 21, on the par 72 Shuksan Golf Course layout for a total of 157, 13 over par. Somers finished nine strokes back of state champion Kristin Tan of Holy Names, who shot a pair of 74s over the two rounds to grab the title in a mild upset.

Tan, who finished second in the SeaKing district championship to Issaquah’s Brittany Tallman, beat the Eagle senior — and Somers’ longtime rival — to claim the state trophy.

The boys were just as strong, as two of three Wildcats made the cut and had solid efforts. Sophomore Bradley Harrelson led the Mount Si threesome, carding rounds of 76 and 74 on the par 72 Bellingham Golf and Country Club course for a total of 150, six over par over the two days last week. The score was good enough for a 16th place finish, tying him with Mercer Island’s Brian Tolkin for that spot.

Freshman Jack Kelly, in his first state tournament at the high school level, had a good debut performance, scoring rounds of 77 and 79 over the two days for a final tally of 156, 12 shots over par, which earned him a tie for 30th with Eli Creighton of North Thurston High School, which is located near Lacey. Kelly was pleased.

“This was my first year at state and I had a great time,” he said. “It was a lot of fun and it was very good competition.”

Kelly discovered that some pretty important observers were on hand at state.

“College coaches were there watching the groups and it was all good competition and practice for the years to come,” he said.

The boys winner was local favorite Matt Rawitzer of Squalicum, located in Bellingham. He shot rounds of 69 and 70 to post a four-shot victory with a total of 139. Harrelson finished 11 strokes back; Kelly finished 17 shots off the pace.

The lone Wildcat to miss the cut after the first day was Mike Rutledge, and he didn’t miss by much. He shot an 80 in round one last Tuesday, falling short by just two strokes. The junior played the first day with the eventual state winner, Rawitzer.

Overall, the Wildcat boys finished ninth as a team in the competition; the Mount Si girls did not place as a team due to Somers being their only representative. O’Dea won the boys’ team title; Enumclaw grabbed the girls’ team crown.

Kelly called the boys’ ninth place team finish a great accomplishment.

“The ninth as a team is something really cool that we should be very proud of,” he said.
