The Mount Si girls’ gymnastics team set a new school record for most points scored in a meet while competing against Sammamish on Thursday. Even so, the Totems still defeated the Wildcats by a score of 169.75 to 152.70 at Mount Si High School.

Coach Renee Tredo praised Sammamish’s strength and expects the Totems to perform well at the district meet.

The Totems’ Helen Wong took top honors in the all-around competition; she won three of four individual disciplines and finished with a score of 36.35.

Regan Sutton and Jessica Anders-Wilson also performed strongly for Sammamish.

For Mount Si, Piper Sherbon placed in all four events and earned all-around honors with a score of 33.4, good enough for fourth place. Merritt Kott (8.5 on balance beam), Kayla Jayne (8.3 on vault, and 8.2 on floor) and Lauren Paulus (30.9 in all-around) were also individual placers for the Wildcats.

Mount Si’s beam routines were delayed when the Wildcats’ second scheduled gymnast, Melissa Henning, suffered a serious ankle injury after falling from the beam during her routine. A few Wildcat gymnasts had to help her off the floor after several minutes.

Tredo said Henning sprained her ankle and she may have damaged her tendons. She did not know how long Henning would be out.

Next week, the Wildcats bring in Interlake and Bellevue for a meet on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

“Mount Si has been doing very well,” Tredo said of her squad. “We beat a school record tonight by five points.

“We have potential to win that meet,” she said of the upcoming event against Bellevue and Interlake. “We want to win that meet, so we’ll push to take that one next week, and if we take that, then we will end our season at 3-5, which would be perfect for us and a great position for us.”
